Steve Mermell is a seasoned public servant with over 30 years of experience in California local government, including serving as City Manager of Pasadena, one of the state’s most respected and multifaceted municipalities. Throughout his career, Steve has earned a reputation for sound financial management, collaborative leadership, and an unwavering commitment to public service.

Steve successfully led the city of Pasadena through both the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic—emerging with the city’s financial position not only stable, but strengthened. He worked closely with employee groups, elected officials, and community stakeholders to ensure the long-term sustainability of public services and pension obligations.

Today, Steve continues his work in the public sector as a municipal consultant, advising cities in California and beyond on strategic planning, operational efficiency, budgeting and other key issues. His focus remains on helping public agencies thrive—while honoring the vital role that public employees play in our communities.

Steve is running for the CalPERS Board to protect retirement security, promote responsible investment, and uphold the values of transparency, fairness, and long-term planning. He brings a deep understanding of the CalPERS system and a lifelong commitment to the mission of public service.

He believes every public employee deserves the retirement security they’ve earned—and that CalPERS must remain strong for generations to come.
